HOW IS AN ASPHALT REMOVE AND REPLACE INSTALLED?

Surface preparation:
  • A layer of asphalt up to 3” thick is torn out and removed from the driveway

(The exposed base will either be just a gravel base or an asphalt base over a gravel base)

If the base beneath the asphalt is just gravel:
  • Vegetation is cut out and removed, and a herbicide is applied to inhibit regrowth
  • The gravel base is spread out – graded – and shaped for drainage
  • The gravel is compacted with a vibrating roller to form a solid foundation
If the base beneath the existing asphalt is asphalt over gravel:
  • The surface is edged to remove overgrown vegetation and blown clean of loose dirt and debris
  • A tack coat is applied to the existing asphalt surface so the new asphalt surface bonds correctly
  • Holes, failed areas, and weak spots are repaired with new asphalt
  • Low spots and uneven areas are leveled with asphalt
Asphalt Installation:
  • The prepared base is paved with a new surface of hot mix asphalt
  • The asphalt is tightly compacted using steel drum vibrating rollers
  • Vertical asphalt edges are hand compacted to maximize durability

WHEN REMOVING AND REPLACING IS THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR ASPHALT DRIVEWAYS IN NORTHERN VIRGINIA

An asphalt driveway remove and replace is the best option when the existing driveway has:

  • Large cracks that move under vehicle load
  • Severe or widespread alligator cracking that is loose or moves under vehicle load
  • Widespread base or sub-grade failure
  • Drainage problems that require regrading or reshaping to correct
  • The overall surface height is restricted from being increased without causing issues.
  • Only removing the asphalt at garage floors, walkways, and aprons would create performance issues (Awkward or sudden slope and elevation changes or drainage problems – all common issues on smaller driveways)

If this describes the condition of your asphalt driveway – then a remove and replace is probably your best option.

why a remove and replace is sometimes necessary

WHY A REMOVE AND REPLACE IS SOMETIMES NECESSARY

If the existing asphalt surface is structurally unstable or has widespread sub-grade or base failure a remove and replace is the best option because recapping over these underlying issues would cause them to be carried through to the new asphalt surface causing premature failure.
