WHAT IS A TAR & CHIP DRIVEWAY RECAP?

The existing paved surface is prepared as needed and then paved over with one or more courses of tar & chip

HOW IS A TAR & CHIP RECAP INSTALLED?

Surface preparation:
  • The surface is edged to remove overgrown vegetation and blown clean of loose dirt and debris.
  • Holes, failed areas, and weak spots are repaired with hot mix asphalt, asphalt millings or gravel base
  • Low spots and uneven areas are leveled with hot mix asphalt, asphalt millings or gravel base
  • Hot CRS-2 liquid asphalt binder is spray applied uniformly across the surface using a heated, insulated asphalt distributor truck.
  • 3/8” crushed washed granite chips (#8’s) are spread over the hot asphalt binder using a chip spreading truck and hand tools.
  • The stone is compacted using large rollers.
  • (For double course installations the above steps are repeated)

WHEN RECAPPING IS THE RIGHT CHOICE

A tar & chip driveway recap is the best option when the existing driveway has:
  • Large individual cracks that are stable under vehicle load
  • Alligator cracked areas that are not loose and are stable under vehicle load
  • Alligator cracked areas that are loose or do move under vehicle load but are localized enough to be repaired prior to recapping
  • Low spots, dips, unevenness, or settling where settling is not still currently ongoing
  • Drainage issues that do not require full regrading of the driveway to correct
  • Holes and broken up areas that are localized enough to be repaired before recapping
  • Older patches or crack repairs that are stable under vehicle load
  • Base or subgrade failure that is localized enough to be repaired before recapping
If this describes the condition of your existing driveway then recapping is probably your best option.

WHY A RECAP IS USUALLY THE BEST OPTION

The base beneath an existing asphalt driveway is either one or more layers of asphalt installed over a gravel base or just gravel base by itself.
If the existing asphalt surface is fully removed, you will either be left with a thinner asphalt base or no asphalt base at all.
Recapping over your driveway keeps your entire asphalt base plus the gravel base beneath it intact as the foundation for your new driveway.
This provides:

  • Less chance of new settling occurring because the base is not being disturbed
  • A much more durable and longer lasting tar & chip driveway than a remove and replace
  • Lower cost than removing and replacing your asphalt driveway

For driveways that are structurally sound – recapping is a far more durable and long lasting option than removing and replacing.
