Northern Virginia Asphalt & Tar & Chip Paving Reviews & Customer Testimonials
Because there are many widely held misconceptions today, this page is intended to educate homeowners on how to fairly evaluate online reviews and understand how contractor review/referral sites actually operate—while also providing direct access to Standard Paving’s real Google customer reviews—so homeowners can make more informed hiring decisions for asphalt and tar & chip paving contractors in Northern Virginia.
Until fairly recently, homeowners would typically ask contractors for references and personally visit completed projects to evaluate the quality of the work. That firsthand approach remains the most reliable way to judge a contractor, because it allows you to see real results and make up your own mind instead of relying on secondhand opinions.
The reality these days, however, is that most people simply do not have the time to drive around fighting traffic to multiple locations to evaluate references in person—and repeat that process for every contractor they’re considering—all while balancing work, family obligations, and everyday responsibilities.
As a result, homeowners now rely much more heavily on online reviews to help make hiring decisions.
The challenge is that not all review platforms operate the same way, and not all reviews are equally reliable. Understanding where reviews come from—and how to tell real, meaningful feedback from noise—is essential when evaluating any contractor.
This page features reviews from customers who hired Standard Paving for asphalt paving and tar & chip paving projects, including residential driveways and private roads throughout Northern Virginia and beyond.
All reviews referenced here are real Google reviews written by actual customers we have completed paving projects for.
We do not host separate testimonials, edit feedback, or selectively display reviews on our website. Rather than highlighting individual reviews, we link directly to our full Google review profile so property owners can see our complete customer feedback exactly as it appears on Google, without filtering or modification.
How to Read These Reviews
While we make every reasonable effort to deliver quality work and a positive experience, any company that operates in the real world for a long period of time will encounter situations where not every customer is fully satisfied. That reality is reflected here as well. As with any situation, there are always two sides to every story, and we’re always willing to discuss our perspective with anyone who has questions about a specific review.
Because we complete a significantly higher volume of paving work each year than most contractors whose primary focus is residential driveways and private roads, it’s important to view reviews in context.
More than a decade of research into online consumer behavior shows that negative experiences are far more likely to prompt customers to leave feedback than positive ones. Simply put—people who are unhappy are far more likely to take the time to leave a review than people who are happy.
What you see here is a real-world snapshot of customer feedback—not a curated or selectively filtered set of testimonials.
Why Google Reviews Are Different
Google reviews are in a category of their own when it comes to honesty, transparency, and reliability for unbiased customer feedback on local service businesses.
Google’s core business is search—not selling contractor leads, paid memberships, or review placement. Contractors cannot pay Google to improve ratings, suppress legitimate reviews, or control which reviews are shown. Reviews appear publicly, are tied to real user accounts, and remain visible unless they violate clearly published policies.
Whether a contractor advertises with Google or not has no impact on how reviews are displayed.

A Note About Fake Reviews and How to Spot Them
While Google reviews are by far the most reliable, no review platform is completely immune to abuse. Knowing how to spot fake reviews helps homeowners evaluate feedback more accurately and avoid being misled.
Common warning signs of potentially fake reviews include:
- A sudden large spike in review volume within a very short period of time
- Reviewer profiles that are newly created or have little to no prior review history
- Reviewers posting reviews for businesses in widely different cities, states, or regions
- Generic or vague review language that lacks specific details about the project, the work performed, or the location
- Reviews that read as broadly positive but could apply to almost any contractor or service
- Multiple reviews using very similar wording, phrasing, or tone
- A lack of meaningful long-term review history for the business
- Review ratings made up entirely of 100% perfect five-star reviews
It’s also worth noting that the market for fake reviews is very real. Businesses, including ours, are routinely contacted by third parties offering to post fabricated reviews for a fee. We have always refused these offers, but they would not exist if companies weren’t willing to buy them.
You can also independently confirm that the buying and selling of fake reviews is a real and widespread practice by searching online

Why Many Other Contractor Review Platforms Are Less Reliable
Homeowners often encounter contractor review and referral platforms such as Angi, HomeAdvisor, Yelp, and the Better Business Bureau. These platforms are frequently assumed to function as neutral review systems, but they operate very differently.
Homeowners visit these sites believing they will be reading fair, unbiased reviews so they can make informed decisions about who to hire. What they often don’t realize is that these platforms generate most—if not all—of their revenue from the businesses they list and review, through advertising, paid leads, memberships, accreditation fees, and promoted placement. These offerings are typically sold at different levels, with higher payments tied to increased exposure or visibility.
If the companies being reviewed are also the ones funding the platform, an obvious inherent conflict of interest exists. When the fox is guarding the henhouse, a certain amount of skepticism is justified.

When a contractor is not paying to participate, legitimate positive reviews are more likely to be filtered or hidden. By contrast, negative reviews are far less likely to be filtered or removed, even when they appear questionable. The practical effect is that review visibility can vary based on paid participation rather than purely on customer experience.
Contractors are relentlessly contacted through unsolicited emails, text messages and phone calls by company representatives seeking to sell advertising packages. That has been our experience as well. We view this model as pay-to-play and have made a deliberate decision not to participate, even though doing so may result in our business appearing less favorably on those platforms.
It’s also worth mentioning that the Better Business Bureau’s business model is often misunderstood. The BBB is a private business funded largely by business accreditation fees—not a government affiliated agency. While customers can leave reviews and complaints on the BBB website, those reviews do not directly determine a company’s letter grade. In plain terms, a business can maintain a high BBB rating while still having unresolved complaints or negative customer feedback, because the letter grade is based on internal criteria rather than a simple reflection of overall customer satisfaction.
