Asphalt Driveway Services

Professionally installed and maintained asphalt has a service life of 20 to 30 years or more making it one of the most durable and affordable paving materials available. If your asphalt driveway is breaking up earlier than expected, the cause can usually be tracked down to one of three reasons. Subbase issues frequently cause the replacement of driveways. Lower quality asphalt was used in the installation. Lastly, maintenance, which isn’t much, has never been performed allowing the asphalt to degrade by exposure to the elements.

The key to getting a full life out of asphalt is professional installation and maintenance. That’s where Standard Paving comes in.

Here’s a quick list of our asphalt driveway services:

  • Asphalt Driveway Maintenance. As resilient and long lasting (20 to 30 years) as asphalt is, it is still susceptible to damage by the environment. To minimize that damage a coat of high-quality sealant should be applied every three to four years. Our state-of the-art tools and experienced crew will make short work of the project and leave your asphalt looking brand new.
  • Resurfacing Asphalt Driveways. If you have multiple small cracks (less than ¼ inch deep) we can grind off the top layer of asphalt, clean the surface, and use a paver to install a new, thin layer of asphalt. Once that layer has cured, we will return and put down an asphalt sealant providing additional protection.
  • Repaving Asphalt Surfaces. When asphalt develops deep cracks, potholes, crumbling edges, or low spots, repaving is often the best solution. This involves locating and cutting out failed asphalt, filling the cracks and holes, cleaning the surface and then using a self-leveling paver to install a new layer of asphalt, Edges are trimmed and compacted by hand. A roller compacts the asphalt to ensure a solid bond with the subbase.
  • Replacing Asphalt Driveways. If your asphalt drive has “grayed out, is flaking asphalt, has pot holes and crumbling edges, it may have reached the end of its service life. When this occurs, we arrive with our excavation equipment and rip up the old asphalt in preparation of installing a new drive. A careful inspection is made of the subbase and issues like drainage, tree roots, inadequate fill material are resolved. From there the process is much like a repaving project. When completed you have a slate black surface good to go for a couple of decades or more.
  • Tar and Chip Paving. This century old paving process is very popular in Fairfax County. Not only is tar and chip less expensive than hot-mix asphalt, it provides an all weather road with a rustic, pebbly texture, that can be color coordinated with the landscape. Tar and chip is a mixture of liquid asphalt and chip stone gravel, compacted together with a commercial roller. The color of the gravel determines the color of the surface. Sandy tans, rustic oranges, even ocean blues can be achieved with custom gravel.
We believe that the best way to ensure your 100% satisfaction is to be completely transparent about the process. We spend the time making certain all your questions are answered and you are completely familiar with how the work will be done, how long it will take, and what it will cost…guaranteed. We have a reputation for being affordable and there are never any hidden costs associated with our work.

Rural projects often involve repaving existing asphalt or tar and chip driveways and private roads, or paving over existing gravel surfaces with asphalt or tar and chip. In many rural and horse-property settings, tar and chip is often selected because it is more cost-effective than asphalt on longer driveways and larger private road projects. It provides better traction, eliminates dust, prevents washouts common with gravel, and provides a natural appearance while reducing long-term maintenance. Surface selection ultimately depends on traffic demands, budget, aesthetic preference, and long-term maintenance expectations.

Across all counties we serve, the setting may change — but our standard does not. Every project is designed to perform and built to last.

our approach

Experienced, Full-Time Crews

Proper installation depends on the experience of the crew performing the work.

At Standard Paving, we have our own full-time, experienced crews who install quality asphalt and tar and chip surfaces day in and day out. That focus is reflected in the consistency and long-term durability of the pavement we install.

Our crews understand surface preparation, grading, material placement, and compaction — the steps that determine whether a driveway or private road performs properly years from now. That level of consistency comes from experience, repetition, and attention to detail.

Proper Equipment and Installation Practices

Professional paving requires professional equipment.

At Standard Paving, we own and operate the top-of-the-line paving equipment necessary to perform grading, material placement, and compaction correctly. Quality paving is not just about the surface — it begins with preparation and ends with proper compaction.

Long-term durability depends heavily on how the base is prepared and how materials are installed. Using the correct equipment allows us to achieve consistent grading, uniform material placement, and proper compaction across the entire surface.

Attention to these details separates short-term results from pavement designed to perform and built to last.

Clear, Written Proposals

Every Standard Paving project begins with a clear, written proposal outlining the scope of work, materials to be used, and total cost, so our customers know exactly what work will be performed and what the total cost will be before the project begins.
