Tar & Chip Paving
What is Tar & Chip Road Paving?
Tar & chip road paving (which is also referred to as chip seal, estate paving, macadam etc.) is similar to asphalt. It is a combination of hot liquid asphalt cement, (liquid A/C) as a binder and gravel as the main structural component. Unlike hot mix asphalt which is premixed at an asphalt plant, tar and chip components are delivered separately and mixed on the jobsite. Tar & chip paving is nothing new. It has been used for over 100 years all over the world, with great success, to pave and resurface roads. Because it is relatively inexpensive compared to hot-mix asphalt, tar and chip paving is a favorite of County, State and Department of Transportation road crews on public road paving projects in every state in America.
For homeowners and businesses, tar and chip paving is a popular and affordable alternative to asphalt for driveways, parking lots, pipe stem communities, HOA private roads and lanes. Tar and Chip’s unique, rustic appearance and textured surface bring real architectural value to your paving project.

Why Tar and Chip?
Tar & Chip costs less but has several benefits over other paving solutions. Tar and chip looks like a beautiful stone driveway. You can control the color of your drive by selecting the appropriate chip stone for the mix. The stone is compacted into a layer of hot liquid asphalt forming a rock hard, all weather driving surface with superior traction qualities.Tar and chip is an appropriate solution for new construction, repaving asphalt and gravel driveways, and replacing driveways that are at the end of their service life. Why not take advantage of these tar and chip benefits?

Why You Need an Experienced Tar and Chip Paving Contractor
Not all paving companies offer tar and chip paving. Unlike modern black top paving which relies heavily on technology like self-leveling pavers, tar and chip installation relies principally on experience. Too much liquid asphalt and the “tar” can seep through to the surface and create sticky tar bubbles your tires can track into the garage. Too much chip stone and you’ll be spraying gravel every time you drive on the road. This wastes material and can potentially chip the paint on your vehicle. Too little of either material and the roadway can lose its structural integrity. At Standard Paving we have both the experience (30 year’s worth) and the equipment to consistently put down a quality tar and chip surface. We’ve done hundreds of them over the years. If you are considering tar and chip, then you need to call the contractors who will get it done right the first time and get in done on time. How is Tar & Chip Road Paving Installed?
After the prep work is completed (which is almost identical for Tar & Chip paving, as it is for asphalt paving) First a coat of liquid A/C is applied to the existing surface. This is accomplished by using a distributor truck equipped with spray bars, to apply an exact and consistent amount of liquid A/C, heated to the right temperature. Then a uniform layer of clean, crushed chip stone is spread using a spreader box attached to the dump truck transporting the gravel. The stone adheres to the hot liquid asphalt. Finally, a roller is used to imbed the stone into the tar. The entire process is repeated on jobs where multiple courses are required. Finally, a roller is used to imbed the stone into the tar.
