Burke Asphalt Driveway Paving – Don’t Pay for What You Don’t Need

Repairing, repaving, and replacing, asphalt driveways is probably the most common asphalt project we perform in Burke. Asphalt driveways have an enormous impact on the curb appeal and property value. When they develop cracks, potholes, and crumbling edges, it’s time for homeowners to protect their investment by restoring the driveway.

But just what kind of “restoration” do you need. Generally speaking, the earlier you catch asphalt failing, the less expensive it is to repair and the faster the job can be completed. We offer three levels of asphalt driveway restoration.

  • Asphalt Driveway Repair. If your asphalt is cracking but the cracks are less than ¼” deep, we can take two approaches, The first is to simply fill the cracks and then use a roller to smooth out the surface. A sealant is applied giving the drive a like new slate black finish. If the cracks are shallow but extensive, we can resurface the drive by grinding off the top layer of failing asphalt, cleaning the surface, and installing a thin layer of new hot asphalt. Both of these techniques can be completed quickly and are comparatively inexpensive.
  • Asphalt Driveway Repaving. If the cracks are deeper, you have potholes, crumbling edges, low spots where rain puddles, repaving is typically called for. Our crew identifies and cuts out asphalt that has structurally failed, levels up low spots, and scrapes off and disposes of any loose or crumbling asphalt. We then bring in a self-propelled, self-leveling paver to install a new asphalt surface. A compactor then ensures a solid bond with the subbase and creates a smooth, beautiful new black surface. Typically you can drive on the surface within 24 hours of installation.
  • Asphalt Driveway Replacement. A professionally installed and maintained asphalt driveway will last 30 years or more. If your driveway is “graying out” and has multiple holes and deep cracks, it has either come to the end of its service life, or there are serious problems with the subbase. Either way it will need to be removed. To do that we bring in our excavation equipment to rip up the asphalt and then examine the subbase. Often there are drainage issues that cause the subbase to collapse or buckle causing cracks and failures in the asphalt surface. We will ensure the subbase is properly prepped and then bring in the self-leveling paver followed by the compacter roller. When we are done and have thoroughly cleaned up after ourselves, you’ll have a driveway that will last you decades.
  • Affordable Alternative to Hot Mix Asphalt. Tar and chip paving is a process developed nearly 100 years ago to pave roads where hot asphalt wasn’t available. It’s still used today by county road departments, not because hot asphalt isn’t available, but because it cost about half what asphalt cost. Tar and chip paving, also known as macadam, uses liquid asphalt and fine gravel to create an all weather, maintenance free, surface. The principal difference between hot asphalt and tar and chip is color and texture. Hot asphalt is slate black. The color and texture of tar and chip depends on the color and size of the gravel used. Tar and chip paving can be used for residential driveways or business parking lots. Talk to us if this is an alternative you are interested in.

There is a substantial difference in cost between repair and replacement. Our expert estimators will examine the drive and then make a recommendation. We will explain why we are recommending a particular technique and of course, answer any questions you may have about the project.
