HOW IS ASPHALT DRIVEWAY PAVING OVER GRAVEL INSTALLED?

Surface preparation:
  • Vegetation is cut out and removed, and a herbicide is applied to inhibit regrowth
  • The existing gravel base is dressed up with additional base material if needed
  • The gravel base is spread out, graded, and shaped for proper drainage
  • The gravel is compacted with a vibrating roller to form a solid foundation
Asphalt installation:
  • The prepared gravel base is paved with a new surface of hot mix asphalt
  • The asphalt is tightly compacted using steel drum vibrating rollers
  • Vertical asphalt edges are hand compacted to maximize durability

WHEN ASPHALT PAVING OVER GRAVEL IS THE RIGHT CHOICE

Asphalt paving over gravel is the right option when the existing gravel driveway has:

  • Dust issues in dry weather that coat vehicles and house exteriors
  • Mud and tracking during wet conditions
  • Gravel washouts or stone loss after heavy rain
  • Ruts, potholes, or uneven driving surfaces that continue to return
  • Damage from snow plowing
  • Poor traction or vehicle tire spin on hills and entrance aprons
  • Ongoing grading and weed control that have become difficult to keep up with
  • A desire for a smoother, cleaner, lower-maintenance driveway surface
  • A preference for asphalt instead of tar & chip for the project

If this describes the condition of your gravel driveway, asphalt paving over gravel is probably the right option.
