Repair, Repaving, and Replacing of Asphalt Driveways, Parking Lots, and Private Roads

Here’s what we can do as a professional asphalt paving contractor:

  • Repair/Resurface: If you have shallow cracks in your driveway (less than ¼” deep) then we can repair the surface simply by filling the cracks and applying a slate black sealant. If there are signs of structural asphalt failure, the we can resurface the drive by grinding off a half inch or so and then applying a thin replacement layer. That layer is compressed to ensure a good bond and the net result is an asphalt driveway that looks brand new.
  • Repave Asphalt Driveways: If there are numerous deep cracks, potholes, low spots, or crumbling edges, repaving is the answer. We will inspect the drive. Sometimes there are drainage issues that affect the subbase that need to be resolved before any repaving can be done. Repaving involves cutting out and removing failed asphalt, filling holes, and using a self-leveling paver to install a new asphalt surface. That surface is compressed to create a smooth, hard surface. Lastly a sealant is applied to preserve the asphalt.
  • Replacement of Asphalt Driveways. A badly damaged or “grayed out” drive needs to be removed and replaced with a new drive. This involves bringing in excavation equipment to break up and remove the old asphalt and the levelling and compacting of the subbase. With that task done, a self-propelled, self-leveling paver applies a new asphalt surface. Edges are hand trimmed and compacted giving the drive a crisp, professional finish. A commercial vibrating compacter is used to smooth out the asphalt and create a hard surface. After a few days of curing, a sealant is applied, and the drive is good to go for the next 20 years or so.
  • New Construction. If you are having a new home constructed in Annandale, or if you are a developer creating new residential or commercial space, call Standard Paving for your asphalt requirements. We hold a Class A Virginia Contractor license, carry two million dollars in liability insurance (and workman’s compensation) and have the staff and resources to take on any size asphalt paving project. We work well with the other trades and are flexible in scheduling requirements.
  • Tar and Chip Paving. There is an alternative to hot mix asphalt. It’s less expensive, it provides an all-weather surface that is maintenance free, it’s a bit tricky to install, but it is an economical alternative to traditional asphalt. It’s called tar and chip paving and it has been around for about 100 years. You may know it as macadam or chip seal. Typically, it is used in rural areas that are not near asphalt batch plants. It entails putting down a layer of liquified asphalt, followed by a layer of gravel, followed by a commercial roller that compresses the gravel into the asphalt. It has a “crunchier” texture than hot mix asphalt and the color is determined by the color of the gravel used. Standard Paving is one of the few asphalt paving contractors in the Washington Metro area that has experience with this type of paving. Contact us if tar and chip paving sounds like an option for you.

Your home is likely the largest single investment you will ever make. Protecting its value by maintaining curb appeal is to important to leave to a can of DIY patch asphalt. And that’s why you want a professional asphalt paving company to do the job.

Tar and Chip Paving – An Alternative to Asphalt for Great Falls Homeowners and Business Owners

Nearly a hundred years ago, a New Zealander came up with tar and chip paving, also known as chipseal or macadam, as an affordable way to pave dirt and gravel roads as well as repaving asphalt roads. It quickly caught on in the U.S. and continues to be used today particularly on county roads.

Tar and chip paving can be used the same as asphalt paving for driveways, parking lots, or private roads. It is particularly appropriate for a property that has a rustic setting. Unlike hot asphalt’s slate black color, tar and chip paving is more of a rustic gray and has a “crunchy” texture.

Preparation of a surface for tar and chip is identical to that used for asphalt paving. Unlike hot mix asphalt, tar and chip uses an asphalt emulsion (liquid asphalt) and chipped gravel which is applied separately at the job site.

Liquid asphalt is sprayed on the subbase followed by an even layer of chipped gravel. A commercial grade compactor then imbeds the gravel in the asphalt, compresses the mix, and results in a rock hard, all weather, no maintenance surface. It’s fast, it’s significantly less expensive than asphalt paving, and it’s a dying art in northern Virginia. Standard Paving has over 30 years of experience applying chipseal. We have the equipment and more importantly, we have the talent who can expertly install the surface.
