Asphalt Paving Projects We Specialize In

The truth of the matter is, we work on all asphalt surfaces, roads, driveways, parking lots, jogging paths and more. However, we find ourselves paving asphalt driveways more than any other type of project in Falls Church. A driveway is a critical element in a property’s cur appeal. If it is cracked, crumbling, has low spots that puddle rain water or is graying out, it has a tremendous impact on the appearance (and resale value) of your home. Fixing driveways generally comes in three flavors, replacing, repaving, or resurfacing.

  • Resurfacing Asphalt Driveways: This is the fastest and least involved of the driveway solutions. If you notice cracking and the cracks are ¼” deep or shallower, or if you have stains from car fluids or other chemicals, we can make a quick fix. We’ll grind off the top layer of asphalt and replace it with a fresh coat. We will compact it to ensure a solid bond with the underlying coat You can drive on it after about 24 hours. Five or six days later, after the asphalt has had a chance to cure, we will return and apply a sealant and you will have a like new appearance.
  • Repaving Asphalt Driveways: Probably the most common type of project we do. If you have multiple deep cracks, crumbling edges, potholes, and low spots, the solution is usually repaving. Our crew will identify, cut, and remove structurally failed asphalt, level up the drive, fill in the holes, and then air blow the drive clean. We then bring in a self-leveling paver to apply a new coat of hot asphalt. That’s followed by a vibrating compactor to create a hard, stable surface. The edges are trimmed and compacted by hand. This is the process that most roads undergo and when you think of it, your drive is just a very short road.
  • Replacing Driveways: Professionally installed and maintained asphalt has a service life of 20 to 30 years depending on use and climate. If your driveway is crumbling or graying out, it was either improperly installed and maintained, or it has reached the end of its service life. Either way, the only way to fix it is to replace it with a new one. Excavation equipment will remove the existing drive and the subbase will be leveled and firmed up. From there the process is identical as repaving. If you have a concrete driveway that is shot, and you would prefer the slate black appearance of asphalt, we can use the same process to get you a new look.

If your asphalt driveway is looking great but your parking lot, or the roads in your HOA community have seen better days, we use the same processes to bring those asphalt surfaces back to like new condition.

Tar and Chip Paving – The Low-Cost Alternative to Asphalt Paving

You have no doubt driven on tar and chip roads. You just didn’t realize it. Tar and Chip paving, also known as macadam and chip seal, is a common paving process on less traveled public roads. It is significantly less expensive than hot mix asphalt making it a natural choice for county road departments.

Tar and chip looks different than the slate black of hot asphalt. In road use, it typically appears to be gray and a bit gravelly. That’s because it is installed by laying down a liquified Asphalt, followed by a layer of gravel, and then compressed to bind the stone to the asphalt and create a hard surface.

The fact is, the color and texture of tar and chip paving is determined by the color and size of the gravel used. Not surprisingly, road departments use the cheapest and coarsest gravel that they can get away with. However, some designer driveways, parking lots, turnouts and other surfaces look straight out of a décor magazine. If you want rust colored, or pale pink, or a dark brown, it’s all a matter of selecting the right stone…and having an experienced tar and chip paving contractor install it.

Tar and chip paving doesn’t require special equipment but it does require operators with experienced hands and our crews fit that description. Tar and chip is tricky and you’ll want the paving contractor with three decades of experience installing it on your property.
