CHOOSING BETWEEN ASPHALT & TAR & CHIP
There is no single paving surface that is best for every property. The right choice depends on how the surface will be used, the size of the project, budget considerations, appearance preferences, and how much ongoing maintenance the property owner is comfortable with.
Asphalt is typically the better choice for suburban residential driveways, pipe stems, and other smaller-scale paved areas. It provides a hard, smooth, uniform surface with no loose stone, which many property owners prefer for its clean, finished appearance. Because of this, asphalt is commonly required by homeowner associations and is often the only permitted paving option in many communities.
On smaller residential projects, asphalt is often significantly more cost-effective than tar & chip due to the additional specialized equipment and large-scale mobilization that tar & chip paving requires. The primary tradeoff is maintenance. Asphalt requires ongoing upkeep over time, such as periodic crack sealing and sealcoating, to maintain its appearance and long-term performance.
Tar & chip, on the other hand, is often a better fit for estate driveways, horse farms, large rural driveways, and private roads. It has a more natural, rustic appearance that resembles a manicured stone driveway and intentionally retains loose stone on the surface. Many property owners appreciate the character of tar & chip, including the distinctive sound it makes when driven on and the added traction provided by its stone-textured surface.
One of tar & chip’s biggest advantages is that it is a maintenance-free paved surface in the traditional sense, as it does not require periodic crack sealing or sealcoating. While tar & chip can be more expensive on smaller residential projects due to equipment mobilization, it becomes very cost-effective on larger installations, long driveways, and private roads.
Both surfaces perform extremely well when properly designed and installed. Neither is inherently better than the other. The best choice is the one that aligns with your property type, usage needs, budget, appearance preferences, and long-term maintenance expectations.
While this page explains the general differences between asphalt and tar & chip, the real advantages of each surface become clearer when they are compared in real-world use. Both materials have situations where they perform better than the other, and those advantages often change depending on whether the surface is a driveway or a private road.
Our DRIVEWAYS and PRIVATE ROADS sections provide in-depth, use-specific comparisons that explain why asphalt may make more sense in some driveway or private road situations, and why tar & chip may be the better choice in others. These pages walk through the real-world tradeoffs—cost, performance, maintenance, longevity, traction, and repairability—based on how the surface will actually be used.
