WHAT IS TAR & CHIP PRIVATE ROAD PAVING OVER GRAVEL?
The existing gravel private road base is prepared as needed and then paved over with one or more courses of tar & chip.
HOW TAR & CHIP PRIVATE ROAD PAVING OVER GRAVEL IS INSTALLED
Surface preparation:
- Vegetation is cut out and removed, and a herbicide is applied to inhibit regrowth
- The existing gravel base is dressed up with additional base material where needed
- The gravel base is spread, graded, and shaped to establish proper drainage and crown
- The gravel is compacted using a vibrating roller to create a stable, load-bearing foundation
Tar & chip installation:
- Hot CRS-2 liquid asphalt binder is spray applied uniformly across the surface using a heated, insulated asphalt distributor truck
- 3/8” crushed washed granite chips (#8’s) are spread over the hot asphalt binder using a chip spreading truck and hand tools
- The stone is compacted using large rollers to embed the aggregate into the binder
(For double course installations the above steps are repeated)
WHEN TAR & CHIP PRIVATE ROAD PAVING OVER GRAVEL IS THE RIGHT CHOICE
Tar & chip private road paving over gravel is the best option when the existing gravel private road has:
- Dust issues during dry weather that coat vehicles, buildings, and surrounding properties
- Mud, tracking, or soft conditions during wet weather
- Gravel washouts or stone loss after heavy rain
- Ruts, potholes, or uneven driving surfaces that continue to return
- Damage from snow plowing or regular maintenance traffic
- Poor traction or vehicle tire spin on hills, curves, or entrance aprons
- Ongoing grading and weed control that have become difficult or costly to maintain
- A desire for a smoother, cleaner, lower-maintenance private road surface
- A preference for tar & chip instead of asphalt for the project
If this describes the condition of your existing gravel private road, paving over the gravel base is likely the right option.
WHY TAR & CHIP PAVING OVER GRAVEL IS USUALLY THE BEST OPTION
When a gravel private road has a sufficiently deep, solid, and well-compacted base, it can form an excellent foundation for a tar & chip surface.
Unlike many paving systems that rely entirely on a separate surface layer, tar & chip works particularly well over gravel because of how the asphalt binder interacts with the base. During installation, hot CRS-2 liquid asphalt binder is spray-applied directly onto the gravel. The binder penetrates and soaks into the gravel base, locking it together, hardening the surface, and waterproofing it. In doing so, the gravel base is no longer just a support layer—it becomes part of the pavement structure itself.
Stone is then applied over the hot binder (typically a washed chip stone) and compacted. Much of the stone becomes embedded into the asphalt binder, forming the finished tar & chip pavement surface, while a thin layer of loose stone remains across the surface to protect the pavement as it sets and cures.
Because the gravel base is strengthened and sealed from within, and the asphalt binder is protected beneath the stone surface, tar & chip paving over gravel creates a durable, clean private road surface.
For private roads, tar & chip paving is typically a better choice than asphalt due to its lower overall cost, its maintenance-free nature and the limited road closure time required, as it can be driven on immediately after installation.
