The owner of Standard Paving grew up in the asphalt paving and tar & chip paving business. His father started a paving company back in 1976, and he and his three sons were the crew. They learned the business from the ground up, mastering how to use every tool, work every position, and run every piece of equipment involved in installing residential driveways and HOA roads the right way.

When he started his own company nearly four decades ago as a residential driveway paving contractor, he brought that same hands on in the field experience with him, using it to train his own crews how to install asphalt and tar & chip projects, an approach that continues today.

That depth of experience continues to allow Standard Paving to train crews at a level most Northern Virginia driveway, private road, and pipe stem paving companies simply do not have the experience to match.

From initial preparation through final installation, we have successfully completed thousands of asphalt and tar & chip paving projects for homeowners and homeowner associations. When the people running the company truly understand the work, it shows in the quality and performance of the finished paving project.

Today, Standard Paving remains a family owned and operated paving company serving Northern Virginia, built on decades of hands on in the field experience.

CLASS A LICENSED

Becoming a Virginia Class A licensed paving contractor is not easy, and very few contractors qualify. To obtain a Virginia Class A contractor’s license, the following is required:

For asphalt and tar & chip paving contractors, proof of the required years of on the job experience in paving
Proof of the required financial stability
Background checks covering financial, civil, and criminal history
A legally registered business with the Virginia State Corporation Commission
Completion of the Pre License Education Course
Passing the General Portion of the contractor exam
Passing the Virginia Portion of the contractor exam
Passing the Advanced Portion of the contractor exam
For asphalt paving and tar & chip contractors, passing the Specialty Trade Exam for paving (PAV)

Virginia Class A licenses are considered the gold standard for contractors. These strict requirements are why so few paving contractors who install private roads and driveways in Virginia are qualified to hold one. They reflect the level of trust the Commonwealth of Virginia places in a contractor’s experience, financial stability, and ability to perform paving work properly and responsibly.

We specialize in installing asphalt and tar & chip driveways, pipe stems, and subdivision private roads. Our crews are trained specifically for this type of paving, and our equipment is purpose built and properly sized for it. This focus allows us to deliver consistently high quality results.

If it is not an asphalt or tar & chip residential driveway, pipe stem, or private road, we do not do it.

Penetrating petroleum based fog sealers that weatherproof new asphalt and restore lost binder in older, oxidized asphalt to extend surface life
VDOT approved #1 stone (2s and 3s), 21A gravel, and RAP milling aggregates for strong, load bearing pavement bases
VDOT approved SM 9.5 hot mix asphalt for smooth, durable asphalt surfaces that stand the test of time
VDOT approved CRS 2 hot liquid asphalt emulsion and washed #8 stone for beautiful, low maintenance rustic tar & chip surfaces

THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT

Over the years, our experience has taught us exactly which paving equipment is best suited for asphalt and tar & chip residential driveways, private roads, and pipe stems, and we own it.

Our own tri axle dump trucks and trusted hauling partners for dependable, on time material delivery
Insulated heated asphalt distributor trucks for uniform application of hot CRS 2 asphalt emulsion on tar & chip projects
Purpose built chip spreader trucks for uniform #8 stone distribution on tar & chip projects
Skid loaders for asphalt removal, excavating, spreading, and grading base materials
Larger, road quality, self propelled, conveyor fed asphalt pavers with heavier screeds and longer tracks, producing denser, more level, and more durable asphalt surfaces than smaller, less expensive residential gravity fed pavers
Vibratory equipped rollers sized for both large and small jobs, along with plate compactors for areas unreachable by rollers for tightly compacted, durable, wear resistant surfaces
Cold planers for milling down asphalt at tie ins and profiling surfaces for improved grades and drainage
High capacity spray rigs for fast, uniform application of water based sealers and petroleum based fog sealers

We maintain backup equipment for every critical machine we use. If a piece of equipment breaks down on a job site, we have another ready to go so work can continue without unnecessary delays. This allows us to stay on schedule instead of being forced to shut down mid-project and leave the site incomplete and unusable until the equipment is repaired. Unlike the vast majority of small to medium sized paving contractors, we have the road quality, modern, well maintained equipment needed to complete high quality paving work efficiently and consistently.

Our crews arrive on site fully equipped, organized, and with a clear understanding of the work to be performed

WE CLEAN UP

We haul off and properly dispose of all excess or unused materials, including gravel and asphalt debris. Every property is swept, blown off, and left clean before we leave.

We stand behind all of our asphalt and tar & chip work with a full one year structural warranty, and we will still be here to honor it if the need arises.

On paper, most paving proposals look the same. The same scope of work, material types, quantities, and square footage. But in the real world, the finished result can be very different.

When paving proposals look the same, it is natural to be drawn to the lowest price. In most cases, that lower price reflects shortcuts that do not show up on paper, but will show up.

There are plenty of paving contractors out there who are in and out of business every year, offering cheap prices, promising the world, and delivering low quality work. But we are not one of them.
We keep our prices updated based on our current costs so we can remain fair and competitive for high quality paving work, and we maintain a very busy workload at our pricing. When a customer asks us to lower our price or match a cheap estimate, it only leaves us with three options:

Eliminate profit on the job
Cut corners on the job
Pass on the job

We always go with option three.
A good job isn’t cheap, and a cheap job isn’t good.
